A monument was unveiled on Friday just outside Valletta’s main gate, celebrating the capital’s status as a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Unesco recognised Valletta as a World Heritage Site in 1980, as the organisation believed it is an exceptional historical, cultural, educational, and scientific site and that it should be protected from foreign entities.

Parliamentary Secretary for Consumer Protection and Valletta 2018 Deo Debattista said: “Valletta is not the only local site which holds this status. The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum and all our megalithic temples are also proud holders of this title.”

The monument was commissioned by Rotary Club La Vallette at the cost of €6,000 and has been in the pipeline for five years.
