The total resident population in Malta as at December 31, 2016 stood at 460,297, the National Statistics Office said.

The share of the total population that is foreign is 11.8%.

It said in a statement that benchmark revisions were carried out for the estimation of migration flows in 2017.

As a result, national methodologies and data sources were reviewed and updated.

When compared to 2015, the population increase in 2016 was mainly due to net migration.

Persons under 18 made up 17% of the total population, while a further 18.8% were aged 65 and over.

Life expectancy at birth for 2016 stood at 80.6 years for males and 84.4 years for females.
