Balzan dropped two more points in this season's title race when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Floriana.

Floriana showed more urgency early on and they took the lead on 34 minutes.

Receiving a pass from Sebastian Nayar, Mario Fontanella powered his way into the penalty area, overshadowing Elkin Serrano Valero and Bruno with a mazy dribble to hit a low diagonal shot at the far post.

Balzan stepped up their game in the second half and on 47 minutes Alfred Effiong found space inside the area but his shot on the turn was blocked by Floriana goalkeeper Ini Akpan.

The Malta striker threatened again ten minutes later when he sped into the area but his effort was again pushed away by Akpan.

Balzan managed to draw level shy the hour mark when Effiong turned provider when he set up Cadu and the Brazilian hit a fierce drive that flew into the roof of the net.

However, it was Floriana who almost won it late on when Juninho's cross found Fontanella who, however, fired over.
