American jazz pianist and composer Chick Corea will be headlining the 2018 edition of the Malta Jazz Festival, the organisers have announced.

Corea, who had performed in the very first edition of the festival in 1990, is expected to take to the stage at Ta' Liesse in Valletta on July 21.

The 76-year-old will be accompanied by renowned bassist John Patitucci and drummer Dave Weckl. The trio's 2018 tour will be its first in more than 20 years.

A 22-time Grammy winner and National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, Corea became an icon back in the 1970s, during the electric jazz-rock fusion boom.

"We are extremely proud and honoured to be hosting a living jazz legend this summer at Ta' Liesse," the organisers said through a Facebook post.

The rest of the line-up is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
