There are 565 tonnes of white goods piling up at the civic amenity sites, with 259 tonnes of televisions and 163 tonnes of refrigerators alone.

The waste and its disposal falls under EU regulations, and has become a headache for Wasteserv.

Wasteserv – the public entity entrusted with the island’s waste management –  insisted a few weeks ago that the management of electronic waste is “all under control”.

Although waste older than two years has been exported, since then thousands of items have been accumulating, clogging up the sites.

The information was given by Environment Minister Jose Herrera in response to a parliamentary question by MP Marthese Portelli.
