Teatru Malta’s first date with the public this year is the traditional Qarċilla, which refers to the first theatrical text ever recorded in Maltese, dating back to 1760.

The national theatre has teamed up with Jacob Piccinino, fresh from his Parisian experience at École Jacques Lecoq, to work with poet Leanne Ellul on this year’s show  – Il-Qarċilla: L-Għarusa Karfusa.

The farcical charade tells a tale of forbidden love between a fruit and a vegetable from a village called Ħal-Kawlata,  who are travelling on a truck.  The protagonists of this story are Dun Tadama (Victor Barrere), Pomme De Terre (Arthur Dumas), Warda Vjola (Lee-N Abela), Bajtru (Patrick Laera) and, of course, L-Għarusa Karfusa (Mariele Zammit).

The international cast will be speaking Maltese in all sorts of accents, giving this historical event a European dimension. The performance will be enhanced by a set made out of recycled materials by Jennings Falzon, costumesand props by Elaine Saliba and masks by Lucien Cassou.

The event is supported by Festivals Malta and the Ministry of Gozo and is part of the National Carnival Festivities.

Il-Qarċilla: L-Għarusa Karfusa will be held in Valletta on Saturday at 5, 6 and 7pm; Ħamrun on Sunday at 9.30am; Victoria on  Sunday at 3.30pm and 6pm; Nadur on Sunday at 8.30pm and Għaxaq on Monday at 7.30pm. For more details, visit http://teatrumalta.org.mt .
