I refer to the letter by Thomas Zerafa entitled ‘Railway in Valletta’ (February 5).

A few years ago, I had discussed with the Floriana local council the possibility of having such a train monument near Portes des Bombes, on the bridge there. If I am not mistaken, the council had commissioned an architect to come up with designs.

Hard stone could be used to build a train replica. Or it can be made of metal. I remember some time ago a cardboard copy of the train had been built in Mtarfa. Certainly, there are craftsmen and people familiar with the history of the railway in Malta who can be roped in.

The project could include a room displaying photographs and other items related to the history of the Malta Railway. It will be another touristic attraction. Years ago, when I worked as a tourist guide, many tourists had suggested this idea to me.

I wonder whether any EU funds could be secured.

Finally, once again allow me to congratulate the Malta Railway Foundation, which is doing a great effort to promote this part of our island’s heritage.
