I refer to the letter ‘Party interference’ by Charles Micallef (January 24) wherein the correspondent took the Nationalist Party to task for the St Paul’s Bay situation.

In fact, the injunction filed by the Nationalist Party on January 15 was intended to ensure that the majority of valid votes cast obtained by the party during the April 11, 2015 St Paul’s Bay local council election be protected and never negated. Incidentally, “the years of mismanagement and neglect of basic services by the St Paul’s Bay local council”, referred to by the correspondent, can be easily attributed to mayor Ray Tabone’s term in office (though this was conveniently never mentioned by the correspondent).

With regard to the resignation of former PN councillors Robert Piscopo and Joseph Vella (who have now become ‘independent’ members), it stands to reason that when one contests an election on a party ticket, the person concerned has to abide by the party’s statute.
