In his Sunday speech to the party faithful, Joseph Muscat said that the selling of EU passports is a fallback just in case Malta fails to qualify for EU funds (January 29).

That comment highlights the dire lack of policies the Muscat government has with regard to the economic future of Malta. When compared to previous Nationalist governments that had the foresight to launch financial services, iGaming, the pharmaceutical, aviation and marine industries, to mention a few that have withstood the test of time and that now give employment to thousands, it shows the utter poverty of the Muscat government.

For Muscat and his government, the only economic policies that come to mind are the selling of state assets, like the three state hospitals, electricity generation and, of course, prime public land for peanuts. Not to forget the selling of EU passports. This is equivalent to selling the family silver to make ends meet.

Such a policy is not only irresponsible but also shortsighted as one can only guess what Muscat will do when there are no more assets to sell.
