I refer to the letter regarding traffic in Victoria (January 10), wherein reference was made to traffic in lower Republic Street corner with Ninu Cremona Street and the correspondent proposed that Ninu Cremona Street would become a two-way road.

It should be kept in mind that the street in question is a secondary road joining two main thoroughfares, namely Republic Street and Ġorġ Borg Olivier Street. Its main function is to allow easy access to buses heading to Republic Street, either westbound, to Marsalforn, Għarb, Ta’ Pinu, Kerċem etc., or eastbound to Nadur, Xagħra, Xewkija, Mġarr etc. One must take account too of the constant flow of traffic coming down from Ġorġ Borg Olivier Street.

Can anyone imagine what would happen if what the correspondent suggested is accepted, considering that so much traffic is coming from all directions and going to every direction and this in a very restricted area?

There are many other much valid reasons why the suggestion should not be taken up including, of course, more traffic jams at the other point of entering Victoria, that is, upper Main Gate Street.

The number of cars in Gozo is one of the highest in Europe per capita and in relation to area. The solution, in my considered opinion, is to have a proper ring road to avoid all the traffic, including heavy vehicles and commercial transport, going through the heart of Victoria when travelling across Gozo.
