Two new bomb disposal robots and a command centre were commissioned by the Armed Forces of Malta on Wednesday, enabling the Explosive Ordinance Disposal team to deal with bomb threats in relative safety.

The two robots and a low emissions vehicle that will serve as a command centre were inaugurated at Luqa barracks. They replace less sophisticated equipment.

One of the robots smashed a champagne bottle as part of the commissioning celebration.

The robots were purchased from German manufacturer Telerob for some €2.1million, with EU funds accounting for more than half of the outlay.

Lieutenant Colonel Claudio Terribile, who oversees the disposal team, said the new equipment was part of ongoing defence and national security investment.

He was certain that the latest investment, together with training that the team received in Germany, would prove invaluable.

Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia, EU Funds Parliamentary Secretary Aaron Farrugia and senior AFM commanders, were present for the commissioning.
