An exhibition entitled Embedded, by Wioletta Kulewska, inspired by the marine fossil remains found in Maltese limestone, opens on Friday and runs until March 1 at Palazzo de La Salle, Valletta.

All the rock found in the Maltese archipelago, ranging from its greensand beaches and its coralline cliffs, to the limestone used in the construction of buildings, contains petrified life forms of prehistoric life dating back some 35 million years.

Like an ancient fabric of memories, these vestiges of prehistoric life forms inspired Kulewska, a Polish artist who has been living and working in Valletta since 2008, to recreate the elemental process of fossilisation and explore themes of embodiment, resemblance and disappearance.

Her abstract, biomorphic paintings are a series of meditations on fragility, the infinite and the sublime.

Kulewska paints in oils, using gold leaf and a technique of printing plaster sculpture directly on to the canvas.

Embedded will be hosted in the Upper galleries exhibition hall at Palazzo de La Salle, 219, Republic Street, Valletta, from Friday to March 1. It is open from Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 7pm, and on Saturdays from 8.30am to 1.30pm. The exhibition is curated by Sandra Zaffarese.
