Reference is made to the editorial article entitled ‘Developers back off’ (December 18).

I respect this newspaper’s opinion about not entrusting the Malta Developers’ Association with a register for developers but surely not because “they have not been able to bring wayward developers and contractors to order since the coming into force of their code of ethics seven years ago”.

The MDA has worked on many key factors governing the industry, including better order among developers.

Proof of this can be found in the article ‘Developers’ lobby investigates damaged Paceville house’ (October 11). In this case, the MDA was the first to take action even before the relevant State authorities came into play.

One can also see that the MDA has worked itself into a powerful lobby with the Building Regulations Office to boost enforcement.

I also wish to share a personal experience when workers at a construction site close to where I live were making considerable noise during the early hours of the morning. I reported this to several authorities but to no avail. I had no choice but to contact MDA president Sandro Chetcuti who intervened personally and contacted the individuals concerned. Eventually, the morning noise stopped and was restricted to normal working hours. It was a relief there was actually someone who heeded my plea.

No doubt, the editorial was well-intended, however, what was suggested would not lead to tangible solutions. Does this newspaper really think a “truly independent inspectorate legally empowered to do its job without fear of any possible direct or indirect retribution from the industry itself, and equally important, from the government of the day, and keeping away from the influences of politicians from all parties” exists? That is not reality but a per-fect utopic world, which does not exist.

Thus, I cannot understand why hinder someone’s idea, which could be a good move to improve construction management, and, instead, propose a move that can only be effective in a perfect world where no one and nothing is biased or influenced.
