Throughout my medical training at the University of Malta and thereafter, during my surgical career, I always had an interest in pursuing a career in sports. This was probably because, since I was a young child, I was encouraged to take part in sports, both at school and at home.

When an opportunity came up to read a Masters degree in sports and exercise medicine at the University of Bath, I took this up immediately. This coincided with my start in orthopaedic training and I found these two specialities complementing each other very well.

Studying sports and exercise medicine allowed me to give my input in various sports disciplines that include football, athletics, waterpolo and youth sports at different levels, among others.

My dissertation was on waterpolo players. Having seen our national team perform so well. I hope this research will start an interest in research in this sports discipline, which will help it develop.

I finished my studies in sports and exercise medicine in December 2017. I am grateful for the Malta sports Sscholarships under the Ministry of Education for granting me a scholarship in 2012 to this effect.

I am keen to share my knowledge in sports and exercise for the benefit of the Maltese athletes and general population. Thanks to the Malta sports scholarships for increasing the quality of sports in Malta by investing in the athletes themselves and in the professionals taking care of them.
