While I applaud the celebrations concerning St Anthony the Abbot’s day with the blessing of animals by Catholic priests (January 15), I would certainly be more impressed if, from time to time, during their Sunday orations our priests would remind their parishioners to behave in a humane and caring manner towards all animals.

The degree of cruelty towards animals in both Malta and Gozo is totally unacceptable and an influential body like the Church should play its part in consigning this uncivilised behaviour to history.
