My father, Loreto, issued election posters for Melbourne’s Brunswick city council elections in the 1970s in different languages – Greek, Italian and Maltese – reflecting the main ethnicities in the electorate as well as in English (the unifying language of the Brunswick community).

He was Maltese himself (born at Sliema in 1918, original surname was Meilak). Here is a photo of the electoral poster in Maltese c1974.

He stood for the council from the late 1960s to the late 1970s and was mayor on two occasions. He performed his duties on the council while still working in a factory at Preston, Melbourne.
