New Gozo Centre for artists

Gozo Bishop Mario Grech has inaugurated a new centre for projects of liturgical art. The centre, named Eikon, which stands for ‘image’, is located in Triq il-Papa Ġwanni Pawlu II, on the road to Ta’ Pinu.

Mgr Grech expressed the wish that this place would offer a formation service for artists wishing to place their artistic talents at the service of the Church.

Fr Roberto Gauci, who last year worked with other artists on the Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary parvis – to be given a completely new look with mosaic works representing the 20 mysteries of the Rosary – has been appointed by Mgr Grech as the first director of the new centre. For four years, Fr Gauci worked with the Aletti Centre in Rome, which is renowned for sacred art in several churches and other buildings. Fr Gauci said the centre would also offer training and formation to artists wishing to carry out work for the Church.

The first project being undertaken at the centre is an artistic work in mosaic for the chapel of the adoration at Munxar.
