Maltapost was helping DHL with the Christmas rush, a spokesman said yesterday.

The Maltapost spokesman said the company was providing “exceptional deliveries” on behalf of DHL to “facilitate delivery during the Christmas period”.

Such collaboration between the two was a common occurrence in Christmastime, he said, adding it was normal for different companies to work together during such a busy period of the year.

People have taken to social media to lament about delays being experienced by the international courier service provider with many expressing concern that their Christmas gifts would not be delivered on time.

According to social media posts, packages ordered from overseas arrived in Malta early in December but had not yet been delivered due to a backlog by DHL.

The Times of Malta reported on Tuesday there were cases where as many as 13 packages had still to be delivered.

The German courier service provider confirmed the backlog in a statement yesterday.

We have put additional resources into place

“We can confirm that we saw a surge of volumes in December that was even higher than we had forecast,” it said. “We have put additional resources into place to ensure that all shipments can be processed and delivered in time for Christmas and are working very hard to clear the backlog.”

Those expecting a package from Maltapost can breathe a sigh of relief because its spokesman assured all that the company was “on track” with its deliveries.
