Saudi air defences on Tuesday intercepted a ballistic missile fired towards the Saudi capital Riyadh, Saudi-owned channel al-Arabiya reported in a news flash quoting a Saudi-led military coalition.
Initial reports from eyewitnesses claim to have seen smoke rising after a blast in Riyadh and saw a plume of smoke rising above the Saudi capital.
The coalition is battling the armed Houthi movement in neighbouring Yemen.
According to the Yemen's Houthi movement's spokesman Mohammed Abdussalam they had fired a ballistic missile towards the Saudi capital Riyadh on Tuesday. Mohammed Abdussalam said on Twitter that a Volcano 2-H ballistic missile was fired towards al-Yamama royal palace.
The Houthi's Al Massira television channel, citing military sources, said the missile targeted a large gathering of Saudi leaders. It did not provide details.
No damages so far of intercepted missile according to reports by Saudi state television.
