Part of the old Malta Railway came to life again in miniature over the weekend at an exhibition of model trains in Paola.

A model of the Ħamrun railway station, once a crucial part of the train line running between Mdina and Valletta, was one of several on display during the exhibition, which was organised by the Malta Model Railways Group.

The exhibition also included two other working layouts, displaying British scenery but not based on real locations, as well as another that is still under construction and one recovered by members of the group before it was thrown out by its owner. It is now being restored.

Vintage trains, some dating back 50 to 70 years, were also on display, and a group member designed livery for one of the locomotives – also fictional – to showcase the upcoming Valletta 2018 celebrations.

The Malta Model Railways Group is part of the larger Association of Model Engineers, which also brings together enthusiasts of model aircraft, cars, military vehicles, marine and space vessels and more.

The exhibition formed part of the Christmas f’Casal Paola celebrations organised by the Paola local council.
