A group of doctors have come together to form a non-governmental organisation encouraging local drivers to be more careful on the road.

Doctors 4 Road Safety's first campaign, 'Driving home safely for Christmas', has launched just in time for the festive season. No details about the campaign were provided.

Health Minister Chris Fearne, who was present for the launch at the University, said that around 20 people lost their life in traffic accidents in Malta each year.

NGO secretary Tonio Piscopo said that besides fatalities, more people were seriously injured in traffic accidents. The aim of the NGO, he said, was to eliminate the number of people who died or were injured in accidents.

Road Safety Council campaign

Meanwhile, another educational campaign on drink-driving was launched in Valletta on Friday. The campaign was set up by the Malta Road Safety Council and Transport Malta.

Transport Minister Ian Borg said that while it was wonderful to celebrate at this time of the year, it was important to do everything in moderation.

He noted that disposable breathalysers were being distributed through the campaign and they would also become available, free of charge, from Transport Malta.

The 'Life is not a game', don’t drink and drive campaign was launched earlier this week.
