Joseph Calleja has added Madison Square Garden to the long list of venues he has performed in, joining fellow tenor Andrea Bocelli onstage at the legendary New York City arena earlier this week.

Mr Bocelli invited the Maltese tenor to join him as a special guest during a packed concert held on Thursday night - the second of two concerts the Italian superstar performed at the 20,000-person venue, as part of his US tour.

The two classical singers have spoken openly of their admiration for one another, with Mr Calleja having invited the Italian tenor to headline his annual concert at the Granaries last August and Mr Calleja calling the Maltese star “one of the greatest protagonists of the current lyrical scene”.

Mr Calleja took to Facebook to share his delight at sharing the legendary stage with his friend and colleague.

"I can't wait to join Andrea, I'm a big fan of his," he said. "It's quite something to be here."

Madison Square Garden is one of the most expensive sports and event venues ever built, and in 2016 was the second highest-grossing concert venue in the world in terms of ticket sales.
