The Palestinian Embassy and Moviment Graffiti held a "gathering of solidarity" on Wednesday, after US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Around 60 people gathered in front of Parliament to listen to the acting head of the Palestinian Embassy Fadi Hanania, Moviment Graffiti activist Andre Callus and Imam Mohammed el Sadi call for an end to the occupation of Palestine.

The international community regarded the West Bank as territories occupied by Israel and although Israel withdrew its military forces from the Gaza strip, it continues to be the occupying power there.

Israel now controlled the territory that Palestinians insist is their own, adding that they want to establish Palestine on all or part of that land, they said.

“Jerusalem will always be the capital of the state of Palestine,” Mr Hanania said, adding that everyone should be allowed to pray in Jerusalem.

“It's time for us to be able to have our own Republic Day,” he continued, calling for international solidarity against Mr Trump's decision.

Moviment Graffiti activist Andre Callus lambasted the "Zionist ideology" that took over Palestinian land and drove Palestinians away from their homeland.

Palestinians were threatened, attacked and kicked out of their homeland by Israeli "settlers" with "absolute impunity," he added.

Mr Callus recalled stories from his time in Palestine of Palestinians seeing bulldozers destroy their homes, and episodes of people being thrown in prison without trial.

"Palestinian people continue to persist and thrive despite this," he said.

Imam El Sadi said Mr Trump's decision would lead to more extremism and violence.

He thanked the Maltese government and Opposition for condemning the US President's decision.

Once the speeches were over, the crowd sang and danced to traditional Palestinian music that filled Republic Street.

Alternattiva Demokratika, which took part in the protest, reiterated its position against the setting up of Israeli settlements in occupied territory and the occupation of Palestine by Israel.

"Unfortunately nothing has changed much since the occupation of 1967, UN resolutions remain ignored and now a US President adds fuel to the flames of hatred. It is patently obvious that violence in the Middle East is a consequence of the violent, cruel and humiliating Israeli military occupation of Palestine,” it said.

The deep sense of injustice and frustration felt by the people of Palestine because of the harsh realities of the occupation of Palestine by Israel needed resolution and the attention of the international community, which had repeatedly turned its back on the plight of Palestinians.

The EU should take centre stage and leadership – Palestine had been waiting for far too long, AD said.
