On December 3, Adrian Delia, while addressing PN supporters in Gudja, made another colossal gaffe. He claimed that the “police were nowhere near to solving the Daphne Caruana Galizia murder case”. He even went as far as claiming that the police commissioner “did not have the will to solve this case”.

Less than 24 hours later, the Prime Minister held a press conference and announced that the security forces had arrested eight persons who were “reasonably suspected” to have been involved in the horrific murder of Caruana Galizia. And Delia ended up with egg on his face.

How embarrassing Delia must have felt when the next day, in parliament, he stood up to reply to the Prime Minister’s ministerial statement about the arrests.

I believe Delia had the chance to redeem himself by apologising to the Prime Minister, the Commissioner of Police and all the investigators and security forces for his utterly irres-ponsible speech at Gudja the previous day.

On December 2, I had started a letter published in this newspaper under the heading ‘Fairytale political ideas’, thus: “The Nationalist Party leader’s political gaffes have no limits.”

Delia proved me right just one day later. I used to say that Simon Busuttil was not fit for purpose as Opposition leader. Delia has already convinced me that he is not even fit to be in parliament, let alone as Opposition leader and a possible distant future prime minister.
