The Malta Police have invited the public to join in a pistol shooting marathon on Saturday in aid of the Community Chest Fund.

The event will be held at the police shooting range at Ta’ Kandja Complex, near Siggiewi between 8am and 6pm.

The event is open to all TA’A’ licensed shooters "and all unlicensed participants over 16 years of age," according to a notice on the Police Facebook page.

The police website says that for a person to obtain a target shooter licence A, he has to be a member of a recognised collector/target shooter licensed club. After the person is trained by the club, he is issued with a recommendation letter and then call at a police station to submit an application for the desired collector/target shooter licence.

Following police internal checks to confirm that an applicant is qualified to hold a collector/target shooter licence, the applicant will be referred to a Weapons Board test to establish his/her knowledge of firearms and their history and the Arms Act (Chapter 480). If the applicant passes the test, he is contacted by the local police station and a collector/target shooter licence is issued.

The Arms Act also lays down that: people under the age of 18 but not under the age of 16 years may, with the consent of their parent/guardian, practice target
shooting with airguns, long firearms with smoothbore barrels and muzzle-loading firearms on a licensed range.
