While there are many who enjoy receiving clothes, bags and shoes for Christmas, there is an equally large number of people who enjoy receiving little bits and pieces to decorate their rooms and lives as presents. Straying away from my usual plea to invest in beautiful sartorial choices for your loved ones this Christmas, here are my three top ceramic picks of gorgeous local pieces which will enhance your houses:

Beautiful ceramics by Stephanie Borg: I first came across Borg’s name a few years ago when I saw one of her distinctive Maltese tile mugs. Bright, colourful and of outstanding quality, her pieces make excellent gifts and stocking fillers and are sure to make the most discerning present receiver happy.

Keeping her themes local, Borg has emblazoned everything, from mugs to espresso cups and coasters with traditional tile patterns and sublimely illustrated unique Maltese doors. Local never looked so good!

Villa Bologna Pottery: Featured in the most beautiful magazine spreads locally as well as abroad, Villa Bologna’s pottery needs no introduction. Offering quality ceramic pieces, there are few house-proud homebodies who haven’t desired their renowned pineapple lamp which was first designed for the Gozo Ta’ Ċenċ Hotel in the 1970s. A similar statement piece that will bring any summer table to life is their  hand-painted dolphin jug, available in olive green, turquoise and blue; this pretty piece makes an ideal gift for the hosts who love to stand out from the crowd.

Sue Mifsud Ceramics: Bursting with life and character, Mifsud’s ceramics are bold and beautiful. Offering gorgeous earth tone mugs and plates any chic earth mother would be proud of, her pieces are a masterclass in quality. Making pieces for everyone from Bahia Restaurant in Lija to La Bête Noire in Paris, the artist gather influences from a variety of sources and experiments with different forms and, while many would be more than happy with one of her lovely mugs, there are few things I covet more than one of her red pagoda pots – it’s a shame that they don’t come with the beautiful black cat that loves to be photographed next to them!
