Transport Malta’s heavy investment in electric cars is understandable and a promising project; 180 electric cars were registered by the third quarter of 2017.
Far, far more bicycles are used for commuting to work each day. Even Nextbike on their own achieve more daily trips than this figure, reducing congestion and emissions. Emissions we may soon be fined for.
So why the appallingly slow start, almost no start, on bicycle commuting? Don’t forget cycle lanes are not really for cyclists, they are to quote Chris Boardman, Manchester’s Cycling Commissioner, for car drivers swapping his or her car for a bike. Just think how the current traffic easing at major junctions makes this almost impossible.
It’s clearly time to go back to the drawing board.
