A total of 250 vehicles with foreign number plates were on Maltese roads for longer than the 30-day grace period allowed, between 2013 and 2017, with the numbers hovering around 90 a year in 2016 and 2017.

Replying to a Parliamentary Question by Claudio Grech, Transport Minister Ian Borg said that defaulters are subject to a fine of €30 per day, adding that the government has now started clamping defaulters to improve compliance.

According to a previous PQ, there were 242 such vehicles in Malta as of October 2017.
