Through a mosaic of encounters and the mixing of genres, including musical and science fiction, Swagger brings to life the words and fantasies of teenagers who are growing up in some of France’s most underprivileged council estates.
Despite how difficult their lives can be, these young people have dreams and ambitions. And no one can take that away from them.
Teen-movie docudrama, Swagger, directed by Olivier Babinet, carries one in the midst of the astonishing minds of 11 teenagers from an underprivileged neighbourhood.
Music by Jean-Benoit Dunckel, member of the music group Air, adds to the magic of this stand-out documentary about a class of French youngsters who are determined to fulfil their dreams even when the cards are stacked against them.
The result is a real-life, coming-of-age tale filled with sincerity, humour and fantastical imagery that reflects the enduring nature of childhood imagination and hope against the odds.
Swagger is being screened at St James Cavalier tomorrow at 7.30pm, on Friday (public holiday) at 7.30pm and on Friday, December 29 at 8.30pm. This film is part of St James’s programme for children and youths. Tickets may be obtained at http://kreattivita.org .
