Justice Minister Owen Bonnici met with Italian politician and former anti-corruption prosecutor Antonio di Pietro today, ahead of a civil society demonstration to be held on Sunday.
Mr di Pietro, who became a household name as the front man of Italy's 'clean hands' campaign to battle the mafia in the 1990s, is in Malta to speak at the rally, which is being organised by the Civil Society Network.
In a statement, the Justice Ministry said the two men discussed "various issues related to the Maltese and Italian judicial systems".
Attorney general Peter Grech and Italian ambassador to Malta Mario Sammartino were also present for the meeting.
The Valletta rally will be the third organised by the Civil Society Network since the October murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. The activist group is calling for the removal of the police commissioner and attorney general, with laws changed to ensure their replacements are nominated by two-thirds of parliament.
Writer Immanuel Mifsud, journalist Caroline Muscat, CSN activist Miriam Galea and Italian investigative journalist Marilu Matrogiovanni are also expected to make speeches at the event.
