Malta is hardly known for its neat and tidy pavements, but this stretch of sidewalk in Birkirkara is astounding even by local standards.

A Times of Malta reader took this photo of a pavement on Triq Ħal Qormi a few days ago.

The photo shows rubbish bags, sacks, cardboard boxes and polystyrene waste all vying for space around a barrel of tile offcuts. The rubbish pile-up appears to have encouraged pedestrian litterbugs, with empty chocolate wrappers, cigarette packets and water bottles dumped nearby.

"It's been in this state for two weeks," she wrote. "Just a week ago, I saw an old lady tripping in all this mess. It's disgraceful."
