A woman suspected of being an accomplice in a child abduction attempt in Malta three years ago has been sentenced to 30 months in prison in Berlin for kidnapping her own daughter.

Claudia Krolik is believed to have helped another German woman try to kidnap her son in Malta in 2014. It is thought she moved from Germany in April of that same year with her then five-year-old daughter, even though the father had custody of the child.

Around May of 2015, she was in Malta together with her daughter and they moved to Thailand sometime later, where Ms Krolik was traced last July and eventually deported to Germany.

The father had travelled to Malta last year seeking information regarding the whereabouts of his daughter, claiming her mother had abducted her. The girl has now been returned to him.

The police confirmed, when asked, that no European arrest warrant against Ms Krolik has yet been issued by the Maltese authorities. The woman was wanted by the police in 2015 in connection with an incident that had happened in November of 2014 in Żabbar.

On that day, Ms Krolik allegedly assisted Petra Nemet in an attempt to abduct her three-year-old son who used to live with his father, Nico Leonhardt, who had been granted sole custody.

The incident was captured by the CCTV system that was installed by the family a few months earlier amid fears for the child’s safety. In May 2014, The Sunday Times of Malta had reported that Ms Nemet was arrested in Żabbar after she turned up with a television crew to see her son. She was arrested over claims she harassed Mr Leonhardt’s partner.

Ms Krolik can still appeal the Berlin court sentence jailing her.
