Mosta battled more than expected to see off Division One side Mqabba 2-1 at the Centenary Stadium to reach the fourth round of the FA Trophy.

Mosta were up and running and they took the lead in their first real scoring opportunity after 16 minutes.

Ekani darted his way past his marker and sent a low cross into the path of Edison Bilbao Zarate who his a thundering drive that flew into the roof of the net.

Mosta remained on top and on 19 minutes Leozinho saw his firm drive blocked in two attempts by Mqabba goalkeeper Jonathan Debono.

Mqabba finally threatened on 36 minutes when Paul Chimezie almost surprised Andreas Vella but his effort came off the bar.

Mosta failed to heed the alarm bells as Mqabba drew level on 41 minutes.

They were awarded a central free-kick and Michael Borg’s inswinger flew into the top corner of the net.

In the second half, the match lost much of its intensity and slid into a scrappy affair with scoring chances a rarity.

When it looked as though Mqabba were gaining the upperhand it was Mosta who regained their lead on 65 minutes.

Zarate chipped the ball inside the area and Tyrone Farrugia reacted the quickest to push the ball into the net.

Mqabba tried to step up the pressure and on 81 minutes Gaetano Gesualdi connected to Michae Borg’s corner but his thumping header flashed wide.

Mosta will now face the winners of the tie between Zejtun and Marsaxlokk.
