A small group of people calling themselves Il-Kenniesa gathered in front of Castille on Sunday, to remind the Prime Minister’s chief of staff Keith Schembri that “we are on his case”.

Mr Schembri, they said, had ignored another invitation from the EU to discuss his involvement in setting up secret Panama companies.

European parliamentarians in Malta on a fact-finding mission will be in Malta on a two-day visit on Thursday.

They are expected to request meetings with the Prime Minister, Mr Schembri, the Police Commissioner and the Attorney General.

While the Prime Minister has said he is always willing to engage with MEPs, Mr Schembri has remained silent on his intentions.

“Logic tells you, if you’re innocent, there’s nothing to be afraid of, and yet?”

Il-Kenniesa said they were aware that Mr Schembri would not be anywhere close to Castille on a Sunday morning, “however, next time, we may not be so subtle.
“The more frustrated we get, the more we fight.”

They said Mr Schembri was not someone the people voted for, yet the Prime Minister reappointed him chief of staff after having appeared in the Panama Papers.

The message Malta’s heads of government were sending was “be a crook, and you may get promoted in this government”.
