SLIEMA WANDERERS 2; GŻIRA UNITED 1
Sliema came from behind to turn tables on their rivals Gzira United.
Fortunes swayed first one way then the other as the Maroons saw their earlier one-goal advantage being neutralised three minutes before half-time before Sliema took a precious lead in time added on to hit the jackpot for the day.
Andrew Cohen’s dipping cross from the ensuing corner was met by Okoye, lurking near the far post, whose powerful header shook the crossbar with the ball dropping just outside the goal-line for the Nigerian striker to push it behind Zammit.
After that goal, Gzira relaxed and although the advantage was flimsy, their confidence looked good enough to keep their opponents at bay.
But in a rare breakaway, Sliema made it 1-1 three minutes from half-time.
John Mintoff let fly a stinging cross-cum-shot that grazed Matias Muchardi’s face, caught the Gżira defence unawares and wrong-footed Anthony Curmi in goal.
Sliema sensed a sudden slump in their opponents’ ranks and Nikolae Milincenau capped a memorable comeback with a fine goal as his swerving effort drifted away from the leaping Curmi and nestled into the far corner.
