I could not but feel revulsion when hearing certain speeches made by foreign MEPs during the debate on the rule of law in our country, especially those by David Casa and Roberta Metsola.

It was glaringly obvious that certain comments made by EPP members were fed to them by Nationalist Party sources. They were copy and paste comments of PN exponents, particularly Simon Busuttil, Beppe Fenech Adami and Casa.

I salute the Labour MEPs for the very hard-hitting and effective way they defended Malta’s name in the face of such a concerted attack mostly by EPP members and their Maltese colleagues who felt no shame at all denigrating their own country.

It was heartening to hear European Commission vice president Frans Timmermans and Estonian Deputy Minister for EU Affairs, Matti Maasikas making it obvious that both the European Commission and the Council of Ministers were not at all impressed by the resolution as both were convinced the Maltese government “is leaving no stone unturned”, to quote Timmermans, to solve this heinous crime (the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia) and were also convinced the institutions in Malta were working. “Do not turn Daphne’s brutal murder into a partisan political game,” Timmermans said.

I was even more disgusted when I heard new PN leader Adrian Delia, who had promised that famous ‘New Way’, say he agreed with what was said by those MEPs who denigrated our country’s institutions, our government, our tax regime, our financial services and iGaming and even the Prime Minister personally, such as by Werner Langen. Such speeches can only damage Malta’s economy and, hence, threaten the jobs of so many thousands of workers.

I have no doubt that what the PN, through its MEPs, did in the European Parliament will be remembered by the vast majority of voters and the party will be castigated at the polling booths much worse than was the case on June 3.
