The eighth German Film Festival, organised by the German-Maltese Circle in collaboration with the Goethe Institute, kicked off yesterday with Stefan Zweig – Farewell to Europe (Von der Morgenröte), directed by Maria Schrader.

Today’s film – 24 Weeks (24 Wochen), directed by Anne Zohra Berached, will be screened at the Embassy Cinema at 6.30pm.

The film follows cabaret performer Astri, who is six months pregnant when she learns that her unborn child will have a severe disability. She and her husband have little time to take a decision of enormous significance.

Astrid loves being a cabaret performer and loves her tolerant and supportive husband Markus.  Every decision is taken together and this one is no different: what will they do with the child Astrid is carrying?

A strong nature with a witty answer to everything, Astrid now feels lost, on her own, impossible to continue her comedy routine. Ultimately only she who is bearing the child can take the weighty decision.

Another film, Wild, directed by Nicolette Krebitz, about an anarchist young woman who breaks the tacit contract with civilisation and fearlessly decides on a life without hypocrisy, will be screened today at 9pm.

All films are in German with English subtitles. Booking from the Embassy Cinema box office, Valletta (tel. 2122 2225). For more information, visit www.germanmaltesecircle.org.
