More than 1,000 migrants were saved at sea in 11 separate operations across the central Mediterranean today alone, the Italian coast guard reported.

The roughly 1,100 people were found aboard 10 rubber dinghies and a small wooden boat. Each of the operations was coordinated by the Italian coast guard's operations centre in Rome.

Italian navy and coast guard vessels, EU Frontex resources and NGO migrant rescue vessels were all involved in rescue efforts.
