FLORIANA                       1

Adamovic 19 og.

SLIEMA WANDERERS       0

Floriana ended Sliema Wandererers' impressive run of four wins in a row after defeating their Old Firm rivals 1-0 at the National Stadium.

The Greens were the brighter side in the first half with their direct approach causing constant concern to the static Sliema defence.

It was the Greens who threatened first after nine minutes when Juninho sped past Riccardo Correa and picked Mario Fontanella inside the area but the Italian striker headed over.

Floriana remained the better side and on 19 minutes they deservedly took the lead.

Steve Pisani sent a long pass towards Juninho who seemed set to outmuscle Adamovic with the Serbian defender inadvertently lobbing the ball over his goalkeeper and into the net for unfortunate own goal.

Sliema were struggling and on 22 minutes Maurizio Vella sped past his marker and hit a firm drive that was pushed away by Glenn Zammit.

The Blues tried to put themselves back into the match but they looked short of ideas with Floriana goalkeeper Ini  Akpan rarely tested.

Sliema finally threatened 19 minutes from time but Sansone’s shot was deflected wide.

On 81 minutes, Miliceanu came close but his low drive flashed past the upright.

In stoppage time, Floriana should have killed off their opponents when in a swift break Pisani put Juninho clear but the Brazilian fired side with only Zammit to beat.

BOV Player of the match: Maurizio Vella (Floriana).
