The winners of the Maltese edition of Wiki Loves Monuments, the Guinness World Record holder for the largest photography competition, was awarded at a ceremony addressed by Arts Council Malta Chairman Albert at Spazju Kreattiv, in Valletta, this morning.

The competition brings together photographers from around the world to take stunning pictures of our cultural heritage to be shared on Wikipedia. Wiki Loves Monuments takes place each year throughout the month of September.

This is the second year that Malta has participated in the competition. A jury composed of local and international experts within the fields of cultural heritage, photography and Wikipedia selected the ten winning entries, which were subsequently submitted to the international Wiki Loves Monuments competition.

These images will be competing with photographs from the other 51 countries around the world that took part in the competition. The top prize went to George Formosa for a stunning aerial photograph of the Citadel in Gozo.

Other winning photographs included shots of the Ta͛ Pinu Church, the Qolla l-Bajda Battery, and St Dominic͛'s Church in Valletta. These entries, together with others from Malta and around the world are currently being exhibited at Spazju Kreattiv. The exhibition closes on December 9.

Over 5,600 photos were submitted to Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in Malta, with over 230,000 further photos submitted around the world across a total of 52 countries.

Since the competition started in 2010, over 2 million photographs have been uploaded. Winning photos from 2016 include the entrance hall to Berlin's Regional court, the main auditorium in London͛s Royal Albert Hall, and the Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) in Bangkok.
