Highly-acclaimed Greek conductor Michalis Economou will lead the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra at a concert entitled The Planets tomorrow at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta.

The concert comprises a musical trip across the solar system with Gustav Holst’s epic orchestral suite The Planets, whose seven movements each represent a planet and its corresponding significance in astrology. It opens with Dmitry Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, which he composed in just three days to celebrate the 37th anniversary of the October Revolution. Economou’s own work Elegies for Death and Life is inspired by a Romantic-era painting by John Martin, and is based on ancient Greek poems.

Mezzo-soprano Clare Ghigo and the MPO chorus directed by Riccardo Bianchi will also perform during the concert.

The Planets concert will be held tomorrow from 8 to 10pm at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta. For enquiries call 2559 5215. For tickets, visit www.maltaorchestra.com/events/the-planets.
