There were 200 attacks on people aged over 60 between January and October this year which - if there is no element of seasonality - would extrapolate to 240 this year, well below the 307 crimes reported to the police last year.
Replying to a Parliamentary Question by MP Stephen Spiteri, Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia said yesterday that the most common crime was domestic violence which accounted for almost half of the 782 crimes in 2015, 2016 and the first 10 months of 2017.
There were 93 instances of pickpocketing and a further 28 of mugging, over the nearly three-year period.
