As from this week, all patients with Type 2 diabetes who use insulin will be given free glucose testing sticks.

It is estimated that around 10 per cent of the Maltese are diabetic.

A national plan was put in place over the past few years to encourage diabetics to test their blood sugar more regularly and as from last year, those who Type 1 diabetes were given up to four sticks a day,

As from this year, the government extended the service on a trial basis to those with Type 2 diabetes who take insulin, and it is now ready to roll it out nationally by the end of the year.

Those who are entitled to the service will be receiving a letter in the coming weeks, explaining from where they should collect the glucose sticks.
