A 19th century villa and one time wedding hall in the heart of St Julians is to be rehabilitated and converted into a retirement home.

The go-ahead has been given by the Planning Commission of the Planning Authority.

Villa Anna Tereza, with its large orange grove and mature garden will be restored and integrated in the overall design of the project. A parcel of land will be excavated and built over to accommodate underlying parking facilities and bedrooms. The retirement complex will include a lobby area, a chapel, cafeteria with seating area, offices and a multi-purpose space.

A building annex which up until today was being used as the kitchen quarters for wedding functions, will be demolished.

To ensure that the complex does not create a negative impact on the traditional urban skyline of the existing streetscape, the buildings will have setbacks floors providing a transition design solution, the PA said.
