Disbarred lawyer Patrick Spiteri, who is facing criminal proceedings over alleged misappropriation and fraud totalling €7.4 million, was granted bail today, after several attempts.

But the decision by a magistrate’s court will not bring about the immediate release since Dr Spiteri’s arrest under separate proceedings still stand.

Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit, in granting bail, observed that, whilst not denying the gravity of the charges, these were not of such an extremely serious nature as to keep the accused behind bars.

The court said it had considered the physical state of the accused, who is suffering from Behcet’s syndrome, a situation made worse by his confinement at Corradino.

The court granted bail on condition that Dr Spiteri does not leave his home and does not approach any of the prosecution’s witnesses.

The court imposed a deposit of €10,000 and a third party guarantee of €20,000, as well as an obligation to sign the bail book which is to be taken to his residence three times weekly by the police.

Lawyer Stefano Filletti was defence counsel.
