A 32-year-old man was this morning handed an 18-month prison sentence suspended for three years after attempting to travel to Dublin with false documents.

The man, Nazgaide Giorgi from Georgia, was arrested as he was leaving Malta with a false passport and driving licence.

The court heard how the man had paid some €800 for the documents which he had obtained from another man while in Leon.

While there, Mr Giorgi was told that the best way to reach Dublin using the documents was to travel via Malta, the court heard. The accused wanted to travel to Dublin to seek employment.

Magistrate Charmaine Galea, who presided over the case, handed the man an 18-month sentence suspended for three years.

Legal aid Yanica Bugeja appeared for the accused while Inspector Frankie Sammut prosecuted.

The man will be travelling back to Georgia this evening.
