The Għadira Nature Reserve in Mellieħa

The Għadira Nature Reserve in Mellieħa

The Għadira Nature Reserve will be reopening to the public for the first time after the summer break with an open day full of workshops, guided sessions and interactive activities today from 10am to 4pm.

From 10am to 1pm: Warden for a Day (with booking at a cost) for children aged eight to 12.

Children may become a  junior warden for a day and help Birdlife’s reserve team with their duties. They will learn and explore the wetland of Għadira with hands-on activities such as monitoring the reserve lagoon, ringing demonstrations, birdwatching and some management work.

Participants should bring a packed lunch, suitable clothing including strong shoes, waterproof clothing and sun protection.

11am-noon, 1-2pm: Beginners’ guide to birdwatching (with booking against a suggested donation of €2) for children aged eight and over and adult.

This one-hour workshop (two sessions) will include some fun interactive activities to help develop one’s observational and identification skills and thus be better able to spot birds.

There will also be a chance to talk to some of the experienced birdwatchers, who will provide some useful technical information that will help participants get the most out of their new skills. Equipment will be provided but one may bring one’s own binoculars.

There will be two sessions with a maximum number of 20 participants per session.

1-4pm: Birdwatching (no booking needed)

After 1pm the reserve will remain open to the public until 4pm. During this time, visitors can do some birdwatching with the help of experts in the field.

There will also be self-led activities, such as quizzes and scavenger hunts available from the Visitor Centre.

There is no need to book for this event.
