Parliament will on Monday discuss potential measures which could be taken to "strengthen" the country's institutions, a House Business Committee decided today.

Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne informed the committee that the discussion was based on the motion presented by Opposition leader Adrian Delia last Monday.

The Nationalist Party informed the House it would first need to discuss the Monday scheduling among its parliamentary group. The party later issued a statement confirming it would take part in the debate and said it was a shame the government had wasted four days out of hard-headedness.

In a statement issued in the afternoon, the government expressed surprised that the PN needed time to discuss the timing of the debate, given that it had sought to interrupt a scheduled parliamentary session just last Monday to discuss civil society calls for change.

"This confirms that the Opposition just wanted to disrupt the House's work, rather than genuinely discuss important issues," the government said.

All votes concerning Budget 2018 are to be taken on December 18, the Committee also decided.
