A two-year Wines of Distinction campaign is being planned across the islands, to raise awareness of the quality wines produced by Maltese vintners.

The campaign is being spearheaded by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights and was designed by a task force composed of local vintners.

A wine appreciation and tasting event is being planned and the establishment of the first-ever ‘Wine Trail in Malta and Gozo’ is also in the pipeline.

Nine wineries in the Maltese islands currently produce DOK (Denominazzjoni ta’ Oriġini Kontrollata) and IGT (Indikazzjoni Ġeografica Tipika) wines and around 450 hectares of land are dedicated to the cultivation of vines. During 2016-2017 season, the wineries produced 458,866 litres of DOK or IGT wine.

Despite the DOK and IGT certification being in place for 10 years, a recent study conducted by the Agriculture Directorate showed that there was not much awareness wine certification.
