Napoli returned to the top of Serie A after emerging victorious in a thrilling clash with Genoa.

Maurizio Sarri's in-form side were knocked off the summit by Inter Milan on Tuesday, but returned to the top after a thrilling 3-2 win at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Former QPR attacking midfielder Adel Taarabt fired Genoa into a surprise lead, only for Dries Mertens to draw Napoli level in the 14th minute.

The Belgium attacker scored again on the half-hour mark to see his side ahead at the break, with Ervin Zukanovic turning Mertens' shot into his own net in the 60th minute.

Armando Izzo's close-range header led to a tense ending but Sarri's Napoli held out for the three points.

Reigning champions Juventus swatted aside promoted Spal by a scoreline as predictable as it was comprehensive.

Federico Bernardeschi fired Juve ahead in stunning fashion after 14 minutes, with Paulo Dybala adding a second before former Swansea striker Alberto Paloschi pulled one back.

However, Spal would eventually fall to a 4-1 defeat in Turin as Gonzalo Higuain and Juan Cuadrado netted in the second half.

Lazio's fine start to the campaign continued at Bologna, with first-half goals Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Senad Lulic meaning the latter's own goal counted for little as they won 2-1.

Simone Inzaghi's side sit fourth and four points better off than bitter rivals Roma, who beat Crotone 1-0 thanks to a 10th-minute penalty from Diego Perotti.

Fiorentina thrashed Torino 3-0 at the Artemio Franchi, where Marco Benassi gave the hosts a first-half lead.

Giovanni Simeone extended the Viola's lead and Khouma Babacar added gloss from the spot, with Antonio Barreca sent off in giving away the penalty.

There was a similarly big win for AC Milan away to Chievo as Vincenzo Montella's side ran out 4-1 victors.

Suso's opener was complemented by a Bostjan Cesar own goal, with Hakan Calhanoglu - one of Milan's many summer signings - extending the lead further.

Valter Birsa temporarily reduced the deficit against his former club, only for Nikola Kalinic to quickly restore the three-goal cushion.

Antonin Barak's strike was enough to secure Udinese a 1-0 win at Sassuolo, while Cagliari edged past Benevento 2-1 in a match that came to a thrilling conclusion.

Paolo Farago put the hosts ahead in the ninth minute, only for Pietro Iemmello to level from the spot deep in stoppage time. There was to be another twist in the tale, though, as Leonardo Pavoletti headed home for Cagliari.

In Wednesday's early kick off, Atalanta racked up a comprehensive 3-0 win against Hellas Verona.

After a first half in which both sides had goals ruled out by the video assistant referee, the hosts kicked on at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia.

Remo Freuler opened the scoring five minutes into the second half, with Josip Ilicic adding a second soon after before Jasmin Kurtic wrapped up victory - Atalanta's third in succession in all competitions.
